~Restorative Aerial Yin Yoga- Each pose in restorative aerial yin yoga is held for 3-5 minutes, it is called Yin Yoga because it harnesses the lunar, more fluid and feminine qualities in the body by nourishing our connective tissue that calls for softening, stillness and the strength.
The reason behind these longer holds involves a short lesson in anatomy. Our bodies are made up of Yang muscles (masculine) and Yin tissues (feminine). Muscles are yang, so in order to be strengthened they must be subject to yang activity such as fast & repetitive movements that create heat. Along with shorter held movements and dynamic stretching (eg. sun salutations). Vinyasa, Hatha, Bikram, Power yoga, etc are all styles of Yang Yoga, and target Yang tissue/muscles.
